A measurement error is the discrepancy between the result of a measurement and the value of the quantity measured.<\/p>\n\n

This value may be the true value or, if this is not known (as is most often the case), the conventionally accepted true value of the quantity, or alternatively the arithmetic average of the results of a series of measurements.
